Gem Varieties Unique / Famous in Sri Lanka

Bring Home the Magic of the Island

Here’s a list of important gemstones you should emphasise — Sri Lanka is world-famous for coloured gems.

Key gems & why they matter

Blue Sapphire

Perhaps the signature gem of Sri Lanka — known for its vibrant colour and high quality.

Padparadscha / Salmon-Pink Sapphires

Rare and valuable, unique colour tones local to Sri Lanka.

Ruby / Corundum family

While Sri Lanka is more famous for sapphires, rubies (a red corundum) also occur.

Chrysoberyl family

Includes alexandrite (colour‐changing) and cat’s eye effect stones.

Spinel

Sri Lanka has abundant spinel — often under‐appreciated but beautiful.

Moonstone

Especially the “bluest” moonstones come from the village of Meetiyagoda.

Topaz, Garnet, Aquamarine, Tourmaline, Zircon, etc:

Many semi‐precious gems are found in Sri Lanka too.

The genesis/geology: explaining how Sri Lanka’s gem deposits (e.g., Ratnapura region) produce these varieties.

  • The significance of “Ceylon” as a gem origin — e.g., “Ceylon sapphire”.
  • What to look for (colour, clarity, treatment) and what makes a “gem of Sri Lanka” special.
  • Why these gems provide a unique value proposition for your travel/tourism brand: e.g., visitors can “see, buy or learn about” genuine Sri Lankan gems; suggest combining gem-shop visits into the itinerary.

Beautiful Gems & Jewellery Shops / Locations in Sri Lanka

Here are some recommended spots you can highlight (for your clients/tourists) where they can visit, see high-quality gems, purchase or simply experience the gem world in Sri Lanka.

Colombo Jewellery Stores (CJS) (Colombo)

Colombo (Western Province), Sri Lanka.

One of the oldest/most established jewellery-brands in Sri Lanka. On their website they highlight that they carry “world-renowned Sri Lankan sapphires” and “a plethora of exotic stones” including emeralds & rubies.

Why it’s good for your section: It gives credibility — you can say “established houses” where visitors can see authentic Sri-Lankan gem jewellery, custom design etc.

Tip for visitors: Make sure to ask about certification and origin; mention that finding “Ceylon sapphire” is a highlight.

Domico Gems (Colombo)

Colombo, Sri Lanka

A gem & jewellery store founded in 1996, which emphasises high quality gems sourced “directly from the rich mines of Sri Lanka”.

Why highlight: It emphasises the “mine-to-shop” story which fits your tourism brand nicely (you could describe a visit/excursion connected to gem sourcing).

Tip: Good for showing visitors that not just retail shops, but understanding the craft and gem cutting is part of the experience.

Gem-Markets & Trading Areas: Sea Street, Pettah, Colombo (Pettah District)

Sea Street, Pettah market area, Colombo

A dense street of jewellery shops; good for visitors to explore and compare.

Why include: It gives a more “local market” experience rather than just elite showrooms; appealing for tourists wanting to browse or buy.

Caution for visitors: As many sources warn, this kind of area has both legitimate and less trustworthy shops — emphasise safe practices (see below).

Gem Town: Ratnapura (the “gem city”)

Ratnapura district, Sri Lanka.

Known as the major gem-mining region of Sri Lanka; you can tie this into your tours (maybe excursions to gem mining or museums) that give a deeper experience.

Why highlight: For the tourism side of “gems of Sri Lanka” it’s an authentic back‐story location and gives a place for excitement beyond shopping.
